Buckets of Reign
By Matt Glazebrook, 26 May 2014
Not only has Schoolboy Q been shaking up the rap world since dropping his major label debut, Oxymoron, earlier this year, he is also single-handedly responsible for the return of bucket hats to the style game. Well, we say single-handedly. The two things correlate – that's for certain.
Q's trademark bucket headgear makes a cameo in his latest video, for Oxymoron cut Hoover Street, though it takes a backseat to the clip's bleak recreation of childhood tribulations under a soundtrack of sleepy beats and gruff, gritty flow.
The current bucket hat renaissance is a bit of a controversial subject. Sure, it's got serious hip-hop heritage (think LL Cool J, Run DMC and Cypress Hill), but there's the whole gardener/grandpa/little kid trying to avoid sunburn image to contend with. To rock yours more Schoolboy Q than schoolboy-on-a-field-trip, keep it casual and summery with jersey shorts, shades and a killer printed tee.
While you psyche yourself up to jump onboard this summer's biggest hat trend – or just agonise over which lovely colour to choose from – kick back and enjoy Hoover Street's bucket-fuelled beats and rhymes.
