Jack O’Connell: Blowing Up
By Josh Woodfin, 21 March 2014
Hold on to your boots, Mr. O'Connell, because you're about to get busy, really busy. The 23-year-old Derby lad first kicked the screens in on our tellies as Cook in Skins, before going on to play terrifying characters in Harry Brown and especially Eden Lake, which one high-falutin newspaper described as 'a performance that is of an actor twice his years: mesmerising, comedic and soulful.'

It's his awesome skills that have since landed him roles in 300: Rise of an Empire, and the, very brutal, very powerful new prison drama, Starred Up(check the slightly NSFW trailer here), which hits cinemas today. O'Connell plays Eric, a young offender who's so out of control he gets moved to an adult prison.

Then later this year, O'Connell will smoothly step into the big leagues as the lead in Unbroken. He'll play Louis Zamperini in the properly incredible true story of an Olympic runner (that's Louis) who is captured and becomes a prisoner in Japan during World War II. This is a real award tickler, and did we mention it's directed by Angelina Jolie and written by the Coen brothers? See: BIG.TIME.
We caught up with O'Connell in the latest issue of ASOS magazine where he talked about his weird, amazing life. 'The whole thing is surreal,' he said. 'But I've become more mature now. I want to preserve. I want to be regarded as one of the best some day. I'm not gonna do that by tw***ing around.'
