Product & Stock

Why did ASOS ban Mohair, Cashmere and Silk?

In June 2018, ASOS announced its commitment to ban Mohair, Cashmere and Silk from its supply chain, placing no new orders and selling all commitment by end of January 2019. They make up a small percentage of ASOS' total fibre mix and we believe we do not need them to produce great fashion. It is important to us that we focus our efforts on those supply chains where we can actually help drive change due to the volumes we are using.

Unfortunately, due to the mild winter we have more stock than we anticipated. To avoid unnecessary waste, we continued selling the remaining stock until the end of March 2019.

JUNE 2020 UPDATE: As of 23rd June 2020, we have committed to removing products containing alpaca wool from ASOS. We will not be placing any further orders for products containing alpaca wool, and will be selling through our remaining product commitment over the coming months.

Additionally, this Autumn/Winter 2020 season, we are stocking a limited number of products containing Responsible Down Standard-certified (RDS) down from The North Face, as well as product ranges using vintage and recycled down. Used by 85 brands around the world and developed by an international working group including animal welfare organisations, RDS is a transparent and ethical third-party certification that ensures down does not come from animals that have been subjected to unnecessary harm. As such, RDS fits within our industry-leading animal welfare policy, which remains otherwise unchanged. We’re looking forward to offering our customers a wider range of product in outerwear this Autumn season, and to giving them real choice in which type of insulating material they prefer.

ASOS is continuously seeking more sustainable alternatives to conventional textile fibres and supporting innovative new materials in our products. View our Sustainable Sourcing Programme here.
