If you buy one dress this season, a prairie frock just might be the best option. It’s versatile, flattering on everyone and works for lots of occasions, from work to vacay. Plus it’s bang on trend, with a multitude of designers going West for SS19 – from up-and-coming labels like Batsheva and Ganni to established fashion houses including John Galliano and Valentino. And no, it doesn’t have to be frumpy, grannyish or look like something out of actual Little House on the Prairie. Allow us to explain...
THE PRAIRIE DRESS WE'RE OBSESSED WITH RN
By Eleanor Dunne, 10 July 2019
John Galliano Creative Director Bill Gayten was inspired by dreamy 70s creepfest Picnic at Hanging Rock (recently recreated in TV form for Netflix), for the label’s SS19 collection. On the catwalk, frilly smock dresses with intricate broderie were styled with wide-brim hats, jam-jar glasses and stompy military boots – perfect for disappearing spookily into the Australian outback (or, you know, stopping off for an after-work G-and-T-in-a-tin in the park).
Here ASOS Lotte proves the prairie dress is the perfect getaway look. Light and breezy, it looks divine paired with some espadrille wedges and set to a golden hour waterside backdrop. Again, one small addition gives it that slightly more modern feel – this time a pair of skinny sunglasses.
Try it on
We’re in love with this prairie beauty by ASOS DESIGN. The plunge neck, the broderie detailing, the tassel sleeves – it’s just what our wardrobes have been looking for. Wear it with the season's straw bag and some Teva sandals, or make like the John Galliano show and toughen it up with some boots and a leather jacket for a transitional look that will see you through to winter. Win.
