3 WAYS TO WEAR THE MILKMAID TREND

By Justine Fedorowycz, 15 March 2019

A close relation to both the prairie and ultra-feminine trends, the milkmaid aesthetic has all the arcadian details you’d expect, with square necklines, puffy sleeves, shirred details — y’know, all that good stuff. Here are three ways you can wear the trend right now (milk pail optional).

We know we’re not supposed to have favourites, but this gingham getup is doing a pretty good job of convincing us otherwise. Giving us a lesson in grunge-inspired picnic couture (it’s a thing), this look is all about balance. On its own, the midi dress is a pretty cutesy piece, but throw in a few ironic monochrome add-ons, including a utilitarian bum bag and ribbed jersey underlayer, and you’ve got yourself a look that’s somewhere between girly and gritty – so good.

Holey crop

OK, so we’re not quite ready to say goodbye to broderie. Now, usually, holes all over your clothes isn’t a good sign, but in the case of this white crop top — ticking all our milkmaid boxes with its Juliet sleeves and button-up bodice — it absolutely is. Give it a 90s-inspired twist by teaming with a baby-blue denim mini skirt and plastic bucket bag. The oversized tortoiseshell hoops help incorporate those on-trend resin accents, too.

Remember that SATC episode where Carrie visits Aidan’s log cabin and tries her hand at living the simple life? Well, this bow-tied button-through number in neon green (also huge right now, in case you didn’t know) is giving us major Carrie-in-the-country vibes. Give it a folksy finish with heeled sandals, a beaded bag and gold hoop earrings.
