5 STRONG CASES FOR PATTERN CLASHING
By Grace Cook, 2 August 2018
We don’t need any convincing that print is a good idea. From leopards to polka dots and gingham checks to the classic Breton stripe tee, there’s space in our wardrobes for them no matter what the season. But why wear one print when you can wear loads? Pattern clash was all over the runways for 2018, seen everywhere from 3.1 Phillip Lim to Vivienne Westwood and Anna Sui. The street-style set are totally on board too – here are five ways to wear it, no matter what your style.
Hide and seek
For the ultimate 90s girlband look, clash bold prints like this street-styler. These high-waisted camouflage trousers are perfectly matched with a checkerboard crop top, in an outfit that reminds us of a mash-up of Cleopatra and All Saints. This look is ideal matched with chunky sneakers – try Air Force 1s to nail the current sneaker trend.
Who'd have thought that a lipstick-print blouse (by none other than Prada) and a flame-hemmed skirt would be such a winning outfit combo? This street-styler shows us how being bold pays off – the unexpected cartoonish prints add a bit of fun to what is otherwise just a simple shirt and pencil-skirt look. A slice of neon proves to be the winning accessory.
Richly textured boho prints are a dream clashing combo for spring/summer. This tribal maxi dress is perfectly matched with a ring-handled bag and this printed style is a fresh take on the string styles we've been seeing all over our Instagram feeds. The more colour the better – mix earthy prints with colourful accents, and don't forget about your sandals. More is more, after all.
Twice as nice
What's the best way to wear your pattern clash? With your mate, obvs. Take your cue from Clueless – or blogger Susie Bubble – and coordinate your clash. These looks are a masterclass in layering prints – choose simple pieces like a cosy knit and a slip dress in colours that are tonal and prints not too dissimilar for the full tie-dye effect. Simple colour-block accessories will keep it fresh. Add a pair of statement futuristic shades and you're good to go.
The mix master
Who says mixing prints has to be reserved for your actual clothes? We're all over the patterned-shirt-thrown-over-the-printed-lace combo of this look. But the real magic happens when the Louis Vuitton classic monogram is thrown into the mix. This cool camera-bag style keeps it looking effortless – extra style points for wearing your bag at the back.
