STYLING

HOW TO WEAR: 80s BOLDNESS

From fluro colours to out-there patterns, the 80s was the era of opulence. Brands such as Versace and Gucci have stayed true to the aesthetic of the era – Italian Riviera vibes, anyone? – but you don’t need to pay top dollar to channel the style. So, here’s how to master 80s boldness for 2018.

The Italian job

OK, so just because you haven’t actually been flexing in Sicily this Euro-summer doesn’t mean you can’t dress like Don Corleone on his downtime. Reference the house of Versace and go for an ostentatious traditional baroque knit layered over an open-collar stripe shirt for your dad’s (or godfather’s, sorry) seal of approval.

On your bottom half, keep your look nice and breezy with a pair of white shorts to contrast the darker colours you’ve got going on up top. Finish off your ensemble with a pair of clear lens specs and suave dark-brown loafers worn with ankle socks.

Sporting greats

It's never too early to get ready for spring/summer festival season, so you’re gonna need rave-ready garms to see you through the sun-filled days and long, hazy nights. Add a touch of 80s vibrance to your wardrobe and throw a patterned track jacket into your camping bag later this year.

To style it, mute the effect of your jacket by opting for a pair of slick grey slacks –  checks are the way to go this season, so feel free to cop a work-appropriate pair to up your day-to-day steez. Go for a pair of OG Reeboks, a corresponding cross-body bag and retro shades to round off your look with a flourish.

80s dad style

Dad knows best

Right about now, your dad's probably feeling pretty smug. That's because the clothing choices that you and other members of your family have probably mocked him for for years are now at the forefront of men’s fashion.

So, make like your old man and crack out a jazzy printed short-sleeved shirt – wear it tucked into a pair of long denim shorts styled with a belt for a touch of old-school freshness. A baseball cap and a pair of bright kicks that reflect the print on your shirt are just what you need to do your dad’s style serious justice.
