STYLISH GUYS IN NEUTRAL DENIM
By Lakeisha Goedluck, 31 May 2018
As is expected when winter rocks around, well-dressed folks everywhere are cracking out their freshest bits of jean-based kit. Double denim, in particular, has lost the reputation of being a sartorial no-no from the 90s and is back in full force for 2018. If you’re up for taking your aesthetic in a minimalist direction, check out how these street stylers are wearing neutral-coloured denim.

Now, there’s an art to wearing co-ordinated outfits with your partner, and this duo has absolutely mastered it. This fella opts for a pale blue long-sleeved top, which he styles with a clean white double-breasted worker jacket and corresponding jeans. Notice how his girlfriend dons matching colours – her light-washed blue jeans and off-the-shoulder white top complement his getup nicely. They both finish off their ’fits with a pair of retro shades for a lesson in how to do subdued yet structural dressing.

Last season, camouflage proved to be a highly popular print – from Maharishi to Liam Hodges, the pattern repeatedly cropped up on the catwalks. This guy has chosen to carry on the hype for camo with a button-through shirt that he pairs with a beige worker jacket. Down low, he goes for a pair of khaki roll-cuffed pants and smart lace-up shoes. But it's his array of accessories that really make his ensemble stand out – just look at that Indiana Jones-style hat, tinted shades and Uniqlo x KAWS x Peanuts tote. So slick.

When it comes to this chap’s look, he’s fully gone old school. Borrowing style tropes from the likes of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Breakfast Club, his 80s-inspired getup is a prime example of casual coolness done right. He starts off with a staple striped T-shirt that he teams with a white denim jacket and matching jeans. He layers up with a slouched leather jacket (complete with lapel pins) and wraps up his ’fit with a steezy pair of minimal canvas sneaks and round sunglasses. Effortlessly smooth.

You’d be forgiven if at first glance you thought that this guy was Tyler, The Creator as he’s channelled hallmark elements of the musician’s style perfectly: the signature cap, oversized hoodie and penchant for lighter colours. Just make sure that your denim jacket is the same length or longer than your hoodie to avoid stunting your silhouette, though. Opt for light-washed jeans like this dude and pop on a pair of white kicks to tie your outfit together.

Sometimes, the best way to wear soft-coloured denim is to keep the rest of your kit simple. This man is clearly well-versed in the practice, as he dons a plain white T-shirt, old-school Aviator shades and an unassuming neck scarf to go with his brown raw-hemmed jeans. On foot, he goes for a pair of woven white canvas kicks to inject a little decoration into his look. Nicely done, sir.
