INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

HOW WE DO: FOOTBALL SHIRTS

Great news, folks – we’re only one week away from the start of an epic month of football. And to get into the spirit of things, the gang at ASOS HQ have been stocking up on their favourite team’s shirts. So, if you want to kick off the festivities in style, here’s some inspiration on how to wear your chosen shirt with the rest of your kit.

Repping Poland, our junior designer Seb keeps the rest of his look understated so as not to draw attention away from his shirt. Choosing to go without any additional layers (hopeful move), he goes for a monochrome colour palette on his bottom half.

Wearing black slim-fit jeans that complement his steezy adidas NMD R2 Primeknit trainers, by opting for minimal colour with the rest of his ’fit, he allows his shirt to stay the focal point of his look. Too slick.

Sometimes simplicity is really key, a style truism long-observed by our Scandi neighbours, who continue to smash the street-style circuit in consistently simple, clean looks. And when you’re rocking a bright centrepiece, it’s all the more important.

Our junior editor Lakeisha goes for a bold pop of colour with the azure Brazil tee, but keeps all eyes on her upper half, opting for minimal relaxed-fit pants on the bottom. To finish off her casual look, she goes for a pair of Nike Air Zoom Spiridon kicks in black with contrast piping.

Thanks to its crisp white colour, the England Home Stadium shirt is an easier one to style. Our project manager Laura teams hers with laid-back cuts for a chilled take on the shirt. Up top, she pairs her strip with a structural poppy-red Weekday jacket.

She keeps her colours subtle on her bottom half and goes for a pair of roll-cuffed slim-fit jeans. Joining in on the hype for retro sneaker models, she wears a pair of all-black Air Max 1s to finish off her patriotic ’fit.

Featuring Bleu de France (French blue) accents, the France Home Stadium shirt is as slick as they come. To counterbalance all those blue tones, our senior content editor Matt has injected his getup with hints of pink.

He layers a pastel-pink shacket over his shirt and goes for wide-leg cropped pants down low. Take note of how the striped patterning on his pants corresponds to his outer layer. He ends his outfit on a chilled note with a pair of minimal canvas creps.

Mashing up influences with eclectic pieces is the way to go for 2018, and what better (and more timely) place to start than with a football tee, seamlessly incorporated into your all-day everyday gear. Engine-red with a contrast green collar, the Portugal strip is our partnership manager Stephanie's shirt of choice, adding a flavoursome sportswear feel to her look.

She amps up the casual vibe with a pair of raw-edge cropped jeans and some minimal white sneaks. But it’s the 80s-style animal-print denim jacket that not only elevates the red of her shirt but also adds a new-season touch to her look.

Donning the Nike Brazil Home Stadium shirt, artworker Nawal has opted for a laid-back look with a touch of skater style. Yellow is a tricky colour to pull off, but he manages it by wearing a long-sleeved white top under his strip.

On his bottom half, he smartens up his ensemble with a pair of pinstripe pants and matching sneakers. Note how he’s opted for subdued colours down low to offset the brightness of his shirt.

For 2018, head-to-toe prints are the one – and the consensus is that the louder, the better. This is where your football shirt comes into play, imparting a bold street-style-meets-sports-kit influence on your 80s-inspired getup.

Junior writer Bella’s Croatia tee makes an instant impact thanks to the red-and-white checkerboard print. She's tucked it into a retro-style polka-dot midi-skirt for a steezy pattern clash, and her siren-red pointed patent heels round off her colour-coordinated look nicely.
