NYFWM STREET STYLE
By Lakeisha Goedluck, 16 February 2018
Both on and off the runway, the early 2018 menswear season has been rife with outstanding getups. The final round of shows took place in New York, and the street stylers in attendance didn’t disappoint — consider it 'the city that never slips’ when it comes to putting stellar ’fits together. So, without further ado, here’s a round-up of the best looks from the Big Apple that you can replicate once autumn/winter hits...

This guy’s got every right to be grinning from ear to ear, cos the steez he’s exhibiting is enough to put a smile on anyone’s face. To start, he pairs a classic black hoodie with light-coloured denim cuts. He then layers up with a longline camouflage coat; the pattern featured heavily on the 2018 menswear catwalks, from Maharishi to Liam Hodges. To finish, he opts for a pair of chunky-soled sneakers.

Nailing two of this season’s most adventurous trends is a tall order, but here it's done with finesse. Experimenting with both bright colours and velour can be tricky, but it all boils down to offsetting your out-there picks with subdued staples. This fella opts for a turtleneck in a similar shade to his velour tracksuit top to keep his under layers uniform. To allow his multicoloured puffer to standout but not look shocking, he rocks plain black trews with matching Chelsea boots on his bottom half. Now that’s how to mix and match without looking messy.

If there was ever a refined take on Steve Zissou’s aesthetic from Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic, it’s this guy’s ensemble. Wearing two similarly striped items is a risk, but the key is to go for structured pieces – hence the boxy jacket and sharp work shirt. To not overcomplicate his look, he goes for a pair of navy wide-leg trousers to match the patterning he’s exhibiting up top. Accessories-wise, he keeps it simple with white kicks, structured shades and a complementary orange beanie.

Favouring bold hues may be the sartorial vibe this season, but luckily for this fella, menswear isn’t just black and white. Monochrome getups always have a place, and this guy more than justifies going back to black thanks to the way he plays around with print, keeping things interesting. Notice the white patterning on the collar of his black shirt that he mirrors via his choice of overcoat. He opts for basic black jeans and a corresponding beanie, but finishes his look by revisiting the balanced colour scheme with his choice of kicks. Two-tone dressing, tackled.

Wearing white separates is a risky move, but it’s one that this guy (and P. Diddy, of course) can pull off. To master the look, he’s offset his base by layering up with a fiery-red ski jacket– note how the pocket of his top features minimal embroidery in the same shade to tie his ensemble together. He follows suit when it comes to his sneaker choice, too – in seasoned sneakerhead fashion, he rocks fresh white kicks with flaming-red shoelace tips.
