Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s opens at the V&A museum this Wednesday. Get the lowdown to impress your mates.
Launched in 1980 by Oxford students Carey Labovitch and Simon Tesler, BLITZ mag documented hedonistic clubbers at London's Blitz Club. Its peers were i-D and The Face, which also launched that year.
Mag contributors included Nick Knight, David LaChapelle, Anna Piaggi, Leigh Bowery, Boy George and Princess Julia while pop groups Visage, Spandau Ballet and Culture Club all have roots in the club.
The Blitz Club’s location between St Martin’s School and Central School meant it was a fave of fashion students who spent Thursdays and Fridays skipping college to create crazy costumes to wear at the weekend.
That thing of wearing designer with vintage? BLITZ started it, shocking the industry by styling designer pieces with high street and sportswear as former fash ed Iain R Webb recalls in As Seen in BLITZ: Fashioning ‘80s Style.
Cara Delevingne and Suki Waterhouse are modern-day Blitz Kids. They totally own the mash-up print clash and novelty accessories look that inspired ‘80s designers like John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood. Look out for the trompe l’oeil badge T-shirts in the V&A’s gift shop.
