The Muppets will be adding extra festive cheer to your small screen this year with their Christmas TV spesh with Lady Gaga, featuring the likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Elton John. But what if you can't tell your Gonzo from your Fozzie Bear? Don't know why they're fashion's favourite puppets? It's time for a two-minute Muppets masterclass.
The Muppets and Lady Gaga at Christmas airs on Channel 5 on 22 and 24 December
The Muppets were the brainchild of genius puppeteer and cartoonist, Jim Henson. They've been the stars of our screens since 1955 when they first appeared on Washington TV show, Sam and Friends, but it wasn't till the late 60s that they gained real worldwide fame for their show-stealing appearances on Sesame Street, before going on to star in their own series, The Muppet Show.
There’s more to the Muppets than Kermit and Miss Piggy (sorry Kermie and Miss P, but the Muppet crew roll seriously deep). Unsung heroes include Icky Gunk – a creepy looking snake with arms and Harry the Hipster, a cigar-smoking, sunglasses-wearing Nick Grimshaw type, both from the Sam and Friends era.
Robbie Williams? Check. Shirley Bassey? Obvs. Johnny Cash? You got it. Amy Adams? Of course! The Muppet Show has a seriously amazing back catalogue of celebrity cameos. These guys are better connected than Kevin Bacon in a mobile phone ad.

Miss Piggy has worn everything from Chanel and Marc Jacobs to Opening Ceremony, she's been FROW at Michael Kors and graced the cover of Tatler (here she is on a faux Harper's Bazaar cover, which we love). She even has her own MAC make-up line because let's face it, Miss Piggy is the queen of dramatic eyes and rosy cheeks. In 2011, O.P.I. even launched a limited-edition line of Muppet-inspired nail varnishes, with shades ranging from ‘Animal-istic’ to ‘Fresh Frog of Bel Air'.
Out March 2014, new movie Muppets Most Wanted sees the felt-skinned collective at the centre of an international jewel heist fronted by a Kermit lookalike. The star-studded cast includes Lady Gaga (who had Kermit as her date to the 2009 MTV VMAs, pictured), Tina Fey, Tom Hiddleston and Usher. Told you: extremely well connected.
Here’s something that will blow your mind – Kermit wasn’t always a frog. He used to have round feet, no collar and resembled something much closer to a lizard. You think you know someone...
