As one of Nike's first-ever designs, this slimline, snub-toed 70s runner was the shoe that started it all 45 years ago – despite a lawsuit from adidas forcing them to drop their original name of Aztec for being too similar to their recently dropped Azteca Runner. Never one to take an L lying down, founding father Bill Bowerman renamed his creation after ‘that guy who kicked the s**t out of the Aztecs’ – and so, the Cortez was born.
We’re not sure if this colourway’s official name – Legion Green – is a reference to that tribal anecdote, or to its diehard fans today, but one thing’s for sure: we’re fully enrolled in the cult of the Cortez. Nike welcomes the arrival of spring with this drop – note the switch-up to suede on the upper, rather than the original leather, which is saved for a contrast hit on the Swoosh and back tab. To make easy work of the transition into the new season, pair these with beige
chinos or work pants, a fresh white tee and a coach jacket.
