What: Drawing inspiration from the menswear catwalks, the Indie Grunge trend is a street-savvy riff on rock'n'roll dressing – equal parts Kurt Cobain and A$AP Rocky. Longer-line streetwear cuts bounce off punk-rock mohair wools and gothic prints, while slick, slimline tailoring and printed formal shirts introduce a dapper undercurrent.
Why: Indie Grunge allows you to flex your fashion credentials with a mix-and-match attitude to dressing. Dominated by black and grey tones, you can clash formal shirts with unlined parkas or team longline knitwear with smartened-up joggers.
Wear: Layering is key, so stagger coated black jeans, a distressed T-shirt, a longline brushed wool cardigan and a lightweight parka – all in the required gloomy palette, of course. Finish with a plain, minimal baseball cap and techy rucksack and you’re good to go.
Listen: For a true rap/rock hybrid, dig out the Jay Z/Linkin Park opus (cough) Collision Course, or go old-school with Aerosmith and RUN DMC’s smash Walk This Way. For contemporary kudos, opt for the ‘ghost-soul’ of London’s Deptford Goth or Chicago-born How to Dress Well’s emo-electro-alt-pop.
Visit: The Crocodile in Seattle. Formerly known as The Crocodile Café or The Croc, this gig venue opened in 1991 and has played host to grunge behemoths Nirvana and Pearl Jam as well as alt-rock legends Mudhoney, Dinosaur Jr, Neutral Milk Hotel and R.E.M in its time.
