If you thought 2013 was a vintage year for TV - thanks to Breaking Bad, Homeland, and more - then you're going to love 2014. Digital Spy Editor, David Moynihan, gives us his top TV picks for the coming year.

1. Legends (TNT)
Sean Bean leads this new thriller, which sees the Game of Thrones veteran play an undercover operative with an identity crisis. Heroes star Ali Larter also dazzles in Mr Bean's (not that one) triumphant telly comeback, which is from the same team as Homeland.

2. True Detective (HBO / Sky Atlantic)
Hollywood heavyweights Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson lead the cast of one of 2014's most hotly-anticipated shows. The pair play investigators on the hunt for a killer that spans 17 years. True Detective looks moody and magnificent.

3. Mob City (TNT / FOX UK)
Oscar nominee Frank Darabont teams up with Prison Break's Robert Knepper, Heroes veteran Milo Ventimiglia and Star Trek's Simon Pegg, for this glossy, star-studded tale of mobsters and coppers beating the living hell out of one another in 1930s Los Angeles.

4. Penny Dreadful (Showtime / Sky Atlantic)
A great cast (Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, Billie Piper) leads this monster-mash thriller - which blends Dracula, Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and more. And the Skyfall dream team Sam Mendes and writer John Logan are in charge, so expect big things.

5. The Musketeers (BBC One)
Alexandre Dumas's classic is given a new lick of paint in this spirited and action-packed new adaptation, which will see four musketeers clashing swords with a magnificently bearded baddie Peter Capaldi.
