Ever since the weather started to take a turn for the worst, we’ve been harping on about the necessity of transitional layers, and you don't get much more transitional than the classic Harrington jacket. An inherently British design, the slick waist-length silhouette was invented in Manchester back in the 30s and has been championed by several subcultures, from skinheads to mods, ever since. For AW17, here’s four fresh contemporary takes on the ever-versatile piece of outerwear.

As far as jackets go, the Harrington is highly functional. It’s lightweight but can offer up that extra warmth you need as the days start getting colder. Opt for a wool-mix number like this one to provide some much-needed sturdiness to your 'fit. Notice the oversized pockets, too, which offer a strong utilitarian edge.

Wear a cream funnel-neck jumper underneath to stay cosy, and pair your look with dark-washed straight-leg jeans to correspond to the hue of your jacket. Monochrome off-white kicks should round off your getup nicely.

The first Harrington jacket was the Baracuta G9 silhouette. Simplistic in its exterior appearance, the jacket is still made with traditional check lining to add some subtle personality. Channel the original iteration with this camel-coloured number from Aquascutum, complete with a bold embroidered chest logo.

Go for full-on skinhead style and wear yours with a button-through plaid shirt in neutral tones. Down low, rock a pair of mid-washed jeans with rolled cuffs to really nail the aesthetic. To finish, choose white calf socks and a pair of all-black Dr. Martens brogues.

If the AW17 catwalks are anything to go by, the 70s is a big trend this season. The jewel tones and fabrics like velour and corduroy that were popular during the decade are back in full force. Stay on point and pick a Harrington jacket like this one with era-appropriate chevron detailing.

Select a white half-zip top to go underneath to really push that old-school aesthetic. Carry on the retro sportswear vibe and go for a pair of relaxed black joggers on your bottom half. Opt for Reebok Club Cs in the same shade as your shirt to tie your look together.

If you're really into retro, who better to look to for inspiration when it comes to throwback threads than someone who lived through said times? That’s right – your old man. Tan was the colour of the 70s, so it’s only right that you own a Harrington jacket in the hue.

Choose an unconventional knit to wear underneath and pair with some dad-worthy straight-leg jeans. To complete your fatherly ’fit, grab vintage kicks, like a pair of classic New Balance 420s.
