HOW WE DO: RETRO STRIPES

By Sam Higgins, 25 May 2017

The arrival of sunshine has brought an interesting sartorial revelation to the fore here at ASOS HQ. If the guys’ early-summer choices are anything to go by, we’re in for a stripy season. But we’re not just talking timeless Bretons – instead, it’s retro-inspired designs that mine the 70s and 80s for some serious SS17-ready steez.

The hooped tee

With the 90s well and truly revived, brands have taken to looking further afield for fresh sartorial inspiration. Here you can see how Puma has used a 70s-inspired palette of murky greens and yellows, pairing the throwback hues with a boxier skate silhouette.

As our junior menswear editor Sam demonstrates, pair the oversized tee with some tapered navy trousers and keep things sockless to show off a fresh pair of white trainers.

The sweatshirt

Our Looped junior editor Nic knows all too well that trusting the British weather can only end badly. Luckily, he also knows that having a strong striped sweatshirt in his seasonal arsenal will keep him prepared for any atmospheric eventuality. The trick here is opting for an oversized fit and making the stripes vertical to help you stand out among the sea of staple Bretons.

Keep the sweats black for maximum versatility and cuff some slim jeans to turn the attention onto a pair of pastel kicks and finish with a light pink cap.

The funnel neck

If you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone and leave your simple tee or sweat at home, take cues from our senior editor, Matt, who’s mixed things up here with this short-sleeved, funnel-neck top. Unlike the other more traditional takes on stripes, this piece boasts a single strike of red that makes a bold statement across the chest.

Then, keeping the palette on point, Matt adds some slim brown chinos and icy-white Stan Smiths to finish.

The boxy tee

Our palettes may be packed with pastel hues of late but, as our artworker Seb shows, an 80s-inspired primary colour-clash can have an equally pleasing effect.

Displayed on a boxy tee, the bold tones are tamed slightly by white stripes but Seb lets the statement piece shine by keeping things simple elsewhere with skinny black jeans and cream Nike Air Max 95s.

The revere-collared shirt

You won’t find much that’s better suited to summer than a revere-collared shirt. But rocking this 50s-flavoured staple doesn’t necessarily mean bold floral prints or pops of primary colour – as our stylist Ben proves here.

For a new take on the short-sleeve shirt, opt for a neat black and white striped version, which works perfectly when the surrounding pieces (tee, denim shorts, white socks, Old Skool Vans) boast a matching, monochrome palette.

The quarter-zip

Even with the mercury rising, the quarter-zip sweat is showing no signs of leaving our wardrobes. This is because, as our artworker Nawal shows here, the piece is easily reworked for the warmer months by placing the focus on design rather than texture.

This lightweight yellow take on the hoodie is broken up with some fine black and white striping that helps the distinctive colour scheme flow into his grey, tapered trews and white kicks.
