STYLE ADVICE

HOW WE DO: CORDUROY

By Kasia Hastings, 5 April 2017

As you might imagine, the ASOS office is a hotbed of style excellence, so naturally we regularly scour it for fresh sartorial insight. Our latest finding? Cord. As fabrics go, corduroy is pretty old school, but we’re not talking dodgy 70s threads here – more of a contemporary, seasonal take on a familiar favourite. Here’s how the guys at our HQ have been wearing it.

The shacket

It’s spring, which spells shacket weather, and this shirt/jacket hybrid is only made better when you add texture into the mix. Opt for a black, grey or navy cord for a cleaner aesthetic, like Sam, our junior menswear editor.

He keeps things nicely coordinated with a matching blue overshirt, Dickies worker pants, suede Gazelles and a grey tee.

The half-zip

The half-zip reigns supreme this year, so a cord overhead is about as steezy as they come. Unlike most of the menswear canon, this streetwear classic can accommodate both texture and colour, so seize the opportunity like designer John, and do both in a cosy burgundy popover.

Team with a white tee, mid-wash jeans and pair of Clarks Wallabees and you’re good to go.

The bomber

The sun may be making intermittent appearances, but there’s still plenty of reasons to invest in a corduroy bomber jacket. In a world full of nylon, silk and camo bombers, cord is a cool new riff on the military staple that’ll look as good in autumn as it does now.

Editorial assistant Alex keeps everything else pared back in black and white to let his top layer do the talking. Nice.

The T-shirt

If you’re bored of your basics, a cord T-shirt may be just what your wardrobe has been missing. Playing with texture when it comes to styles like this can be precarious, but if you go for an understated hue and a simple silhouette, like creative producer Antony, it’ll be the coolest tee you own.

With a statement texture up top, he goes for a pair of pin-rolled, straight-leg jeans, striped sports socks and black Nike kicks to balance things out.

The vintage classic

Brown cord traditionally evokes images of elbow patches and questionable flares, but apply it to a SS17 cut like the shacket and it’s a nice tonal way of wearing the transitional staple. Senior editor Matt teams tan corduroy with a bright yellow tee to lock in a cool 70s colour palette.
