STYLE ADVICE

Nine spring essentials

By Style Feed Staff, 3 April 2016

The caprices of the Great British weather make spring perhaps the trickiest time to dress well. Invest in these nine essentials, however, and you’ll be ready come rain or shine.

A lightweight scarf

As winter turns to spring, your scarf goes from being your most trusted accessory to something of a gamble – if the sun comes out, you’re going to end up carrying it around, which is never a good look. The solution? Put the wool away until next year and buy a lighter alternative in cotton or even silk. This is a great chance to add a pop of spring colour to your wardrobe, too.

A Breton long-sleeved T-shirt

Rooted, of course, in the French navy, this classic blue-and-white-striped pattern has inspired style icons from Jean Paul Gaultier to Pablo Picasso to Mick Jagger through the years. Pair yours with a navy blazer for a timeless look that has the added bonus of making you look vaguely like you know your way around a boat.

Denim jacket

Some men shy away from denim unless it's on their bottom half, depriving themselves of what can be a very handy wardrobe item. The trick is to think of the denim jacket as a layering piece: find one snug enough to go under a thicker jacket but big enough to wear over a crew-neck sweater. And if you’re thinking of trying to pull off double denim, go for it – just make sure the two items are at least a couple of shades apart (or essentially identical if you’re aiming at the bolder ‘Canadian tuxedo’ vibe).

White trainers

Whatever your trainer fetish, a clean, unfussy pair of white sneakers should feature high on your wishlist and subbing them in for your winter boots is a great way to embrace the new season. They can easily form the basis of a smart, casual or indeed smart/casual look – the only tricky bit is keeping them clean.

Bomber jacket

The perfect coat to see you right while winter turns to summer, the bomber suits every body shape and flatters everyone. The big shout is which colour to opt for. Navy is the safe option, but you could always go for a light blue, or even do a James Dean and pick one in red.

A trench coat

For the days when you know it’s going to rain, a light trench will both keep you dry and make sure you're looking sharp. Navy or camel are classic shades for good reason – and don’t forget to pop your collar and loosely belt the waist to finish the look.

Navy chinos

If you’re thinking of showing a little ankle this spring, a pair of navy chinos – rolled up or cut to fit, if you have a tailor – is about the most flattering trouser you can go for. Don’t believe us? Then check out the perennially sockless Tinie Tempah to see how it’s done properly.

A spring blazer

A cotton, jersey or linen blazer in a pale tone is a great statement investment for spring. We’re talking sky blue, light grey or even peach. Layer with an Oxford shirt or light knit plus a scarf (see above) and you’ll not only look the business but you’ll be the perfect temperature, too.

Light knitwear

Another layering superstar, a sweater in light merino wool or cashmere gives you another chance to play with colour and will keep you insulated when the sun vanishes for the 10th time that day. Wear over a T-shirt or Oxford shirt and under a bomber for a classic spring look.
