Remember when you were a kid and you’d cringe at what your dad would throw on for the gardening on a Saturday? Well, if any of those feelings still linger, banish them – you might not think it but your dad’s look is lit, and here’s why.

We all complained when our parents would try and prise us away from the PlayStation for a ‘brisk walk’ and shove us into wellies and a cagoule. But now, with the rise of the ‘urban outdoorsman’, practical pieces such as fleeces, cagoules and puffers are right at the top of our Christmas lists (even if we’re not planning to adventure any further than the pub on the corner). This season, get yours in teddy fleece for an on-trend update to your weekend wardrobe.

Your pa’s baggy-kneed slacks are probably best consigned to the great ragpile in the sky, but cord is back in a big way. Incorporate it into your wardrobe in the form of a chunky retro shacket, or go subtle with a baby-cord shirt or straight-leg trousers.

Roll-neck jumpers

We’re big fans of the roll-neck, and with good reason. While your dad’s pseudo-intellectual phase may have been and gone, the highbrow look is everywhere right now. Layer one under a smart coat for a twist on your tailoring, or go chunky with your winter sweaters. It’ll bring a touch of 60s Michael Caine to your look, which is never a bad thing.

With puffers riding high in the style charts again, the humble padded sleeveless jacket never felt so ‘fashion’. Thrown over streetwear or a directional two-piece, it's a practical shot of warmth that packs a style punch at the same time. This is a whole different beast from your dad's ratty dog-walking gilet, although it carries the same style DNA.

Hiking boots

In the same vein as waterproofs and fleeces, hiking boots have benefitted greatly from fashion's recent obsession with the great outdoors. Street stylers pounding the pavements of London, Paris and Copenhagen could have been headed to Everest base camp if you just took their feet as evidence. Go full explorer with proper cord laces and high-top suede designs for the full effect.
