Five reasons to love Dave Grohl

By Josh Woodfin, 14 January 2014

Happy birthday, Dave Grohl! The Foo Fighters frontman has long been called the nicest man in rock, which is pretty impressive, considering he’s been in two of the greatest rock bands of the last 30 years. But then, maybe that’s the secret. Either way, we wanted to celebrate the big man’s day, so here are five reasons we love Dave Grohl. Got more? Let us know onTwitter.

He looks damn cool

Granted, this isn’t that hard when you’re a well-loved, supremely talented rockstar. But Dave’s no slouch when it comes to style – or rather, he is, but that’s his thing. Shoulder-length hair, good jeans and either a black tee or lumberjack shirt. Wear it right and you don’t need much else.

Seriously, Nirvana and The Foo Fighters? When you can say you played drums on Smells Like Teen Spirit and also wrote, sang, and played the drums and guitar on Everlong, you know you’ve got a strong CV.

He doesn't take himself too seriously

Awards, photo shoots and the other glitzy trappings of celebrity – Dave Grohl cares not for these things. He'll mug for the camera, speak his mind and make some genuinely funny music videos. But when he gets in front of a paying crowd of fans, there's no one more professional.

He has amazing friends

As we said above, Grohl doesn't like being famous. But it's a fact and he makes the best of it by performing with fellow small-time musicians including The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Led Zeppelin and Queens of the Stone Age.

This quote

"Musicians should go to a yard sale and buy an old f***** drum set and get in their garage and just suck. And get their friends to come in and they'll suck, too. And then they'll f***** start playing and they'll have the best time they've ever had in their lives and then all of a sudden they'll become Nirvana. Because that's exactly what happened with Nirvana."
