FLASHBACK FRIDAY

The stylish women of Mad Men

By Susannah Tucker, 21 July 2017

Mad Man premiered 10 years ago and while Don Draper was the centre of the show, we witnessed some of the most fascinating, three-dimensional and flawed female characters ever seen on screen. LBR, we were also there for every pedal-pusher, pencil skirt and paisley print they were dressed in. The costume department served up the tastiest sartorial eye candy for a fashion fan (featuring pleats, plaid and polka dots), so – to celebrate its 10th anniversary – we fondly recall the period perfection of the Mad Men women and their wardrobes.

Suburban bombshell Betty

Let's talk about Betty delivering shade in shades. The high-waist capri pants, the perfectly tucked sleeveless shirt, that ultra-smooth flicked up bouffant, and a facial expression that is all of us when someone takes the last bite of an expensive communal dessert without asking in faux-humility first. We feel you, Betty. We feel you.

Power pantsuit Peggy

Peggy Olson ruled the pantsuit - a surprisingly versatile wardrobe winner that balances masculinity and femininity oh-so-nicely. Case in point? This hella 60s houndstooth vest-and-trousers combo worn over a burnt orange turtleneck. Statement dressing in the workplace that's truly deserving of a promotion - no Topaz Pantyhose account victory required.

You Joan-ly live once

Joan Holloway = iconic. The tousled beehive. The perfectly-tailored pencil dress made extra powerful when served in a knock-out cranberry shade. The elegant gold watch. And, of course, the best jewellery-and-office-stationery hybrid accessory in the history of television fashion.

The gist of Joan's supremely extra aesthetic is slim-cut silhouettes to accentuate the waist and bold jewel tones to stand out in the crowd. This delicious wiggle dress in textured fabric is both work- and wedding-worthy.

Sally Draper from Mad Men wearing go-go boots | ASOS Fashion & Beauty Feed

These boots

We love Sally Draper (and actress Kiernan Shipka). The character was most often dressed in preppy separates, saddle shoes and cute cardigans. However, on one NYC visit, she got her Megan-on, rocking metallic pleats and super sassy white go-go boots.

Give black the boot and set your sights on hot white footwear. Might we suggest this spicy, zip-adorned pair. More glam than go-go, they're this season's take on Sally Draper's white patent stompers.
