Not that either of these two
really need the help but, as is evident here, every man benefits from a bit of good tailoring. While they both have a laissez-faire approach to leisurewear, when it comes to cutting it on the red carpet, a suit is their sartorial saviour. Going head-to-head at the US premiere of The Revenant, both chaps’ suits do a great job of transforming them into moviestar men. Leo’s keeps it classic with a simple cut and muted tie and Tom turns up the tailoring with a three-piece suit so good we made it our OOTD.
Winner: Hardy – well, we did call it in 2015.
The carefully composed components needed to nail smart/casual style are still a mystery to many men, but both actors seem to have a good handle on them here.
Like so many other stylish bros, blue is their hue of choice and it’s the ideal colour to make casual pieces fit for smarter occasions. Both opting for crisp unbuttoned shirts, Leo’s ‘fit has a distinctively preppy vibe, whereas Tom’s oversized blazer-cum-work-coat and chinos are a bit more chill.
Winner: Hardy – unbuttoned and untucked, he knows what’s up.
It’s not entirely fair to judge a man by the choices he makes while he’s finding his fashion feet but here goes anyway. Young Leo is pretty much peak DiCaprio and nothing really comes close to him circa
Romeo + Juliet. This is an early look from him and has cool 90s skater written all over it. Hardy, on the other hand, was clearly having such a good time in 2002 he forgot that he was already wearing a blazer when he put this leather beauty on.
Winner: DiCaprio – 90s Leo lives on in our hearts and wardrobes.
Jeans and jacket
Never far from a flashbulb, these two have to be on their A-game at all times. Whether they're walking an incredibly cute dog or running through airport arrivals, they’ve both developed a strong jeans-and-jacket uniform to see them through. Leo’s paparazzi-shy shades and glasses are more grandma than great but his jacket and suede kicks are still good here. Hardy’s fur-collared jacket is obviously excellent and he picks up serious points for his accessory game with the dog, too.
Winner: Hardy – too hard to resist that pup.
Grooming for gold
These two are pretty committed to their craft – quite often, at the cost of their
grooming game. It’s pretty much a universal truth that Leo looks better beardless and this face fuzz and ponytail combination leaves a lot to be desired. Despite the 00s schoolboy gelled hair here, Hardy fares a little better as his beard is coming along nice and evenly, ahead of his full Bane transformation.
Winner: Hardy – given DiCaprio’s eternal quest for Oscar glory, we’ll forgive him for growing this bushman beard but, on account of noughties nostalgia and top-notch trimming, Hardy’s hair triumphs here.
